After our action-packed trip to the Dominican Republic, it was nice to have a few very quiet days at home before Jay had to return to work - and the kids and I to our normal school routines. We arrived back in Zurich on Sunday, December 30th and spent the next 3 days celebrating Christmas, sledding in the nearby mountains, and sleeping at very odd hours.
New Years Eve was a hit with our gang - Jack woke up at midnight, just in time to see the "thunderworks" (as he called them). They were absolutely spectacular and went on for several hours. With the leaves off the trees, we could see several firework shows right from our beds - which was amazing. We pulled Jack into bed with us and watched them from 12-3... and finally (at the end) managed to get in some much-needed sleep.
On New Years Day, we took the kids to a mini-ski lift and sledding hill about 45 minutes from here. We don't have any snow in Zurich, but within 15 minutes, we were up in the snow - and the kids were so excited! The little ski area we found is perfect for our little ones - there are two tiny ski lifts with rope tows (which we have not tried yet), a great sledding hill (where the kids have to walk back up the hill, rather than ride a lift - a feature my husband loves!), and a cute little cabin that serves warm food for the apres ski. Kate has quickly decided she is her mother's daughter - and much prefers the apres ski scene.
But Jack is our sledding maniac - he can't get enough of flying down the hill like a maniac. Its been fun to watch him - and also for all of us to watch the skiers in preparation for our first "ski vacation" which is scheduled for early February. When I told Jack he was going to get to go to ski school on vacation, he told me, "No Mommy - I already know how to ski." It will be fun to see him in action!
The sledding place is great, and the drive over is really beautiful with views of the Alps nearby - a very wonderful reminder of how lucky we are to have this experience in our backyard.
