Last weekend, our good friend Robert Franklin came by Zurich (en route from LA to London - lucky for us, this seems to becoming a very common layover lately!). He arrived on Saturday evening, and we had a wonderful night - first visiting with the kids (who thought their "Uncle Robbie" was hilarious), and then having a great adult dinner that lasted all night and involved far too many bottles of wine.
We hadn't seen Robert since before his engagement, so we spent several hours getting caught up - with stories, looking at wedding pictures online, and calling his lovely new bride Erin to "formally" introduce ourselves. It looked like such a beautiful wedding, and it broke both of our hearts not to have been there in person. Lucky for us, Robert is an excellent documentarian and storyteller, so in many ways, we feel like we were there.
On Sunday, we let Robert sleep in while we took the kids to church. After a wake-up breakfast of Starbucks, we went on a walking tour of Zurich, which may have been a bit tough on the LA boy - in one walk, we had rain, sleet, wind and sun... in the end, we ducked into Globus for a great lunch - and ice cream afterward at Movenpick. Jay and Robert continued on the tour while I took the kids home for Kate's nap... I'm not sure if it was the tour guide (Jay doesn't believe we should "beat our guests into the ground" just to show them every part of Zurich like I do), their hangovers, or Robert being freezing, but the boys' tour lasted less than an hour - and soon they were back home - which delighted Jack, who was so upset about not having gone on the tour with the "big boys."
We had a quick dinner of pizza and pasta, and then had to take Robert back to the airport. It was a short visit, but reminded us what a wonderful friend he is - and how, even after several years, we could pick up right where we left off. Robert has promised us a foll0w-up visit with Erin - so we're anxiously awaiting meeting her in person!
